The Tulsa group raises over $ 1 million to assist the homeless

A local Tulsa organization raised over $ 1 million in February to help get people affected by homelessness off the streets. Housing Solutions of Tulsa has not only managed to get 400+ Tulsans out of the cold into shelters or hotels, but is now planning long-term solutions for those in need.

The Housing Solutions Outreach Team said they always need donations, but when the life threatening cold weather hit the area, they knew they had to act quickly to get people off the street and into a warm place.

Executive Director Becky Gligo said she called for help and instantly the money flowed from Tulsans, various companies, the city of Tulsa and other partners who wanted to help.

Gligo said they quickly raised over $ 1 million and could move people to temporary hotels while they work for the next several months to give them permanent residency elsewhere. She said they are allowed to stay in their current arrangements until provisioned elsewhere as so much money poured in. Housing Solutions examines affordable housing, hotels, and more for a permanent solution.

“People are really grateful and happy that we showed up and they can trust us and a lot of people are taking this opportunity,” said Gligo.

She said that many people are taking the opportunity to have a place to stay seriously. Gligo went on to say that a woman who stayed in a provided hotel was so excited about this residential benefit that she asked for a front desk job at her hotel and got it right away. She said that due to the growing Tulsa community, the woman is already able to change her life for the better.

“This has made it possible to accommodate people for the next three months and to hire services like home navigators and get DHS involved. We can really make a difference in the community over the next few months,” Gligo said.

She said they still need donations as homelessness is an ongoing problem in Tulsa and cannot be permanently resolved overnight. If you would like to donate, click here.
